    • Scratch Cards History

For decades now, we have been used to being greeted by reams of colourful scratch cards as we queue at a supermarket kiosk or in our local newsagents, and now, scratch cards are popping up online as a virtual version. Scratch cards may be modern, but the concept of them has been knocking about since the mid seventies and slowly but surely since then, they have developed into something that is available in every town across the nation.

The scratch cards history is quite an interesting one as the concept very oddly comes from a virtual version! In 1974, a company named Scientific Games produced a computer based instant lottery game – this was launched way before the cardboard, instant scratch card we know had been invented. After the success of the concept of the instant game, around 13 years later, the patent for the cardboard, real life version was accepted and in 1987, a Rhode Island, USA based company started churning out the cards we now know so well.

In the UK, scratch card started to become widely popular thanks to the National Lottery when they began installing stocks of scratch cards into supermarkets and convenience stores across the country, available at just £1 each. When it began, only a couple of designs existed, but as they grew more popular, more designs, more types and higher priced cards were released.
Today, however, this method is still extremely popular, but not far on its tail is virtual scratch card websites – spaces devoted to scratch cards that can be played with just an internet connection and a mouse with no need for a penny to scratch!

From the computer, to our shops and straight back to the computer again, the history of scratch cards has gone full circle.
